Coastal Gabon is part of the Guineo–Congolian centre of endemism for plants and the rate of plant endemism in Gabon is 12% higher than in neighbouring countries. Plants play a very important part in the indigenous cultures of Gabon, which is why many of the local guides are very accomplished amateur botanists able to identify a great number of the plants and relate their characteristics and significance.
